UV Resin Glass Minnow Step-by-Step:
If you live and fish anywhere along the Atlantic or Gulf coasts, you’ve likely heard reference to Glass Minnows. Tiny (1-3″) and Translucent, these baitfish (primarily of the genera Anchoa and Menidia) are a key forage species for a variety of coastal predators including Redfish, Snook and Speckled Trout.
Tied here on a size 1 Gamakatsu SC15, the pattern requires only four materials, including the titular UV resin.
| Materials: | ||
|---|---|---|
Gamakatsu SC15 (#1-4) | 140-Denier (Pink) | SF Blend Fiber (White) |
Flat Braid or Tinsel (Pink) | Stick-on Eyes | UV Resin |

Tips and Tricks
- Size Matters- While Bay Anchovy reach a maximum length of 4″, it is the younger 2-3″ (and smaller) individuals that are often referred to as glass minnows. Keep this in mind when tying this pattern. If the fish are locked in on 1.5-2″ baitfish, larger patterns may not elicit the response you’re hoping for.
- Flat Braid vs Tinsel – While I used Flat Braid to build the underbody in the Step-by-Step above, Tinsel is a suitable alternative. Both provide a little extra flash on an otherwise translucent fly. Given the option though, I prefer Flat Braid. It has a little more bulk to it and adds in building a slightly thicker underbody before applying your UV resin.
- UV Resin – Speaking of applying UV Resin, consider keeping a bottle of both Medium and Thin Resin when building bodies like that of the Glass Minnow. Medium Resin helps to provide the bulk, while Thin adds the finishing touches and helps to ensure an even shape.
Proof of Concept
As with last month’s Shrimp Slurpee, I attempted to fish this pattern on a visit to the marsh in late November of 2025. The plan was to hit the pier lights before dawn in search of speckled or white trout. The weather turned cold though, and fishing that day was subpar to say the least.
Spring is right around the corner though, so stay tuned…
Tight Line!
