EZ Wrap Cicada Step-by-Step

EZ Wrap Cicada Step-by-Step:

Last fall, I stumbled across a book titled Cicada Madness by Pennsylvania angler, Dave Zielinski. Always on the hunt for new additions to my fly fishing library, unaware that this spring would bring would be bringing a once-in-a-lifetime Cicada Emergence to parts of the south and central US.

Though the area of overlap between the two Broods (XIII and XIX) is further north than I’m likely to venture, Brood XIX (“The Great Southern Brood”) is due to make an appearance for the first time since 2011. With that in mind, I delved into the catalogue of patterns at the back of Dave’s book and began preparing for whatever the spring may hold.

While I’ll likely tie up a few of the recommended patterns before the spring emergence occurs, I decided to start off with one of Dave’s own patterns, the EZ Wrap Cicada. A fairly simple foam pattern, the EZ Wrap lands with a plop and provides a great profile in the water.

*A quick note to our local fly club members: Dave has been kind enough to agree to present remotely at the April meeting of the Redstick Fly Fishers. This should be a great talk & one you don’t want to miss.*

Tips and Tricks

  1. Substitutions – While I tried to stay true to Dave’s pattern, I did take liberties with regards to hook selection as I had an abundance of B10S hooks available in size 6 & 8. In his original, Dave recommends a TMC 2302 in the same size.
  2. A Tip from Dave – I shared a copy of this step-by-step to my Instagram earlier this week. Dave was kind enough to reply, and offered one tip for those of us in Brood XIX country : “Loooookin goood. For the periodical put orange legs on and you are gold!”

Proof of Concept

With the Brood XIX hatch still a few months off, it may be a while before this pattern is proven on the water. Be sure to check back though as an Alabama Redeye Bass trip just might coincide with this year’s emergence.

Tight Line!
