Kreelex Minnow Streamer Step-by-Step:
It seems like there are some days where it takes a bit of extra flash to draw the fish’s attention. Days when the movement of the bucktail or hackle just fall short.
On those days, you’d be hard pressed to find a better streamer than the late Chuck Kraft’s Kreelex Minnow. Described as looking more like a Christmas Tree Ornament than trout fly by some accounts, Kraft’s flashy one material streamer has proven its worth on a wide variety of fresh and saltwater species.

Tips and Tricks
- Selecting Your Flash – The key to this pattern’s success is the crinkled/textured nature of the flash. With surfaces at countless angles, some portion of the material is always guaranteed to be reflecting light. With this in mind, take your time selecting the appropriate flash for this pattern. While the original Kreelex Flash can be tough to come by, Hedron’s Polarflash (used here), Shimmerbou, or FTD’s Northern Lights are all acceptable alternatives.
- Color Selection – Tied above as a single color (gold). This pattern often benefits from pairing a darker shade of flash on the tail/wing with a lighter shade of flash on the belly.
Proof of Concept
While note my intended target, this fly proved too much for the local largemouth to resist on an early January visit to a local pond. With any luck, the version above will produce a few more sizeable bass in the months to come.
For those who fish this pattern, what have you landed on it to date?
Tight Line!
